 NINnies

This week’s conservative panty-twist is over Nine Inch Nails’ foiled plan to perform at the MTV Movie Awards using “an unmolested, straightforward image of George W. Bush as the backdrop.” MTV said thanks but no thanks, and Trent Reznor and NIN dropped out of the show.

So far, so good. But…

On several of the discussion boards I read, conservative wingnuts are frothing mad over Reznor daring to get up on stage and express his political opinions. They’re tiredtired!TIRED! of entertainers not being trained monkeys and just singing and dancing on cue, they want them to stop with the opinions and the criticism and the statements and the thinking and get back to just entertaining us.

And so they’re going to boycott Nine Inch Nails now! (Because NIN have so many Republican customers already — not.) And Dixie Chicks! And Springsteen! And Star Wars! And a bunch of other entertainers who have opinions! Because they’re tiredTired!TIRED! of having politics mixed into their entertainment, so they’re not going to reward that behavior any more! [Pout, stamp foot, whimper.]

So I wonder… Should Toby Keith be worried? Dennis Miller? Mel Gibson? Alan Jackson? And a host of other conservative-leaning entertainers?

I doubt it. Because if there’s one thing a conservative loves, it’s a double-standard.

Many of histories greatest artist were politically outspoken. The notion that “entertainers” shouldn’t be political is nonsense. Now … no one should think they’re experts either, but they still have their right to free speech just like the rest of them.

Senator Joe McCarthy would be proud of the NeoCons. Really … he would.

  2. Gavin says:

*missing entire point of post* That Trent Reznor is pretty hot if you ask me.

  3. Don says:

Entertainers having an opinion is great. The only part that bothers me is when they think their opinion should be given greater weight just because they are celebrities. Oh wait, that’s all liberals.

Celebrities are after all just court jestors and we should be able to order “off with their heads” just like the kings did.

I’m joking about the off with their heads thing. There are more civilized ways like not buying their albums or going to their shows. Both parties can use that method to express disagreement.

Y’see, Don, that’s the thing about you guys. You express your opinions with the same passion we do ours, but when we do it you think we’re saying they’re somehow more important. I think that reveals a bit of paranoia or low self esteem or lack of conviction in your own beliefs — something like that. (That’s my opinion, btw.)

It makes discussion difficult when the other guy gets instantly defensive when you state your own views.

  5. Don says:

And there’s the rub. Yes it does seem to me like you believe your opinion is more important. I say that based on the tendacy of some on your side to call my ideas “batshit crazy”. Am I missing something?

  6. Chuck says:

Yes: context. The first part of the “batshit crazy” sentence was “I may think…” O. Pin. Ion.

It seems to me that you believe your opinions are more important too, but I recognize that they’re OPINIONS. [And therefore wrong. ;) ]
